One of the major headlines leading into the Olympics was the quasi-unity of North and South Korea. Earlier this year, major government officials from North and South Korea met at the infamous 38th parallel to discuss plans of merging the two nations’ Olympic teams. Make no mistake, this was not South Korea ceding power to North Korea. This past June, South Korea Moon Jae-In said that he supported President Trump and his administration’s efforts to dampen North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. Meanwhile, the mainstream media has worked relentlessly in trying to make this look like a loss for President Trump and his foreign policy.
One of the more off-putting things to that have circulated out of this year’s Olympic games is a video of the North Korean cheer squad. The video consists of a team of North Korean cheerleaders, known as “army of beauties,” robotically urging on the Korean Olympic team. A former cheerleader and now escapee of North Korea claims that the cheerleaders are personally hand-picked by the government to join the squad. The idea that people’s souls are being sucked out of them to serve as cogs in the North Korean propaganda machine should be found as disturbing to all Americans. Still, members of the media found ways to outdo themselves and praise North Korea. One CNN article wrote, “They [the North Korean cheer team] brought a glow of color to the occasion, and, even when their team was down and out, which was as early as the first quarter, the squad continued to fill the arena with noise.” Unfortunately, this is not the only case of the media being infatuated with North Korea.
In the poisonous world of partisan politics and the “enemy of my enemy is my friend,” the Left also took no time in adopting Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jung, as its’ new anti-Trump darling. In a New York Times column about Kim Yo-jung, writers Motoko Rich and Choe Sang-Hun fawned over Un’s sister. They wrote, “Flashing a sphinx-like smile and without ever speaking in public, Ms. Kim managed to outflank Mr. Trump’s envoy to the Olympics, Vice President Mike Pence, in the game of diplomatic image-making.” Writing on the same topic, a CNN reporter even went as far to say, “If ‘diplomatic dance’ were an event at the winter Olympics, Kim Jong-un’s younger sister would be favored to take home gold.”
The knee-jerk reaction from many people on the right was to conclude that this shows just how crazy the Left has become over the election of Donald Trump. Many conservatives call this “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The best analogy to the media’s reporting on President Trump is the story of the boy who cried wolf. At this point, the Left has cried wolf so many times about President Trump that people are numb to it. In this case, the media have found themselves so desperate to make President Trump look bad that they ended up propping up one of the worst regimes on Earth.
At this point, should Americans be surprised by something like this? America has now become so polarized by today’s political climate that both sides of the aisle are willing to do anything to tear down the other side. The media’s job is to spread objective truth. If Americans want to see a change, they are going to have to send a message that they will no longer accept the media’s dishonesty: it is time to stand for truth.
