The University of Minnesota provides a comprehensive array of over 180 academic opportunities spanning more than 50 countries, facilitating students in enriching their educational experience through international study programs. The learning abroad program website enables individuals to refine their search based on specific criteria. You can select their preferred country, desired time frame, and academic subjects of interest. On the website there is also a curated selection of cost-effective study abroad programs, designed to accommodate students with financial constraints, ensuring that financial considerations still allow them to take advantage of these opportunities. The University of Minnesota ranked 23rd in the best study abroad category according to the US ranking and World’s report in 2021. The top five destinations being Spain, China, Italy, Denmark and France/United Kingdom and most of the students who study abroad study during the summer term.
One of the study abroad options is studying abroad in Mexico. This trip is offered during winter break, a May session and a summer session. Located in Cuernavaca, Mexico the capital and the largest city in Morelos this opportunity is offered to Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. The required GPA to be accepted into the program is 2.5 but there are no language prerequisites but Spanish is a language that will be taught. The total cost for the trip including housing, tuition, international health insurance and transportation is $4,960 for winter break. For students to budget, the program’s website provides a detailed breakdown of all costs, including additional expenses not covered by the program. This transparency empowers students to budget effectively and gain a thorough understanding of the associated expenses.
The University of Amsterdam also works with the University of Minnesota to allow students to travel abroad into Europe. Offered during the academic year, fall semester and/or spring semester students can travel to Amsterdam, Netherlands and stay in either an apartment or dorm and study at the University of Amsterdam. Taught in English, seniors and juniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are able to spend time studying in Europe and will be fully immersed as a student who lives on campus. Students will take classes as normal and must take a minimum of 15 credits during the fall or spring. If a student were to study in Amsterdam for the entire academic year (fall and spring semesters) the estimated cost for the program is $14,280 and estimated additional expenses are $15,000. The total estimated cost of participating in this program is $32,280. If instead a student wanted to just study during the spring semester the total program fee would be $7,825 and a total estimated cost of participation would be $17,775.
Studying in Sydney, Australia is also another option for students and can either choose to study or intern. Terms offered include the fall semester, spring semester and summer session. To be eligible for this program a student must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum of 2.5 GPA or 2.8 for internships. Housing is provided and will choose between homestay or an apartment. With this program comes many excursion options including the Blue Mountains and Taronga Zoo. If a student chose to do the Summer session the total program fee would be $10,715 and the estimated cost of participation would be $15,215. If a student chose to do an internship they will be enrolled into the Global Internship Course and will work 20 hours per week and can take 12 credits regardless of which internship program they are enrolled into.
