On February 11th the Kansas City Chiefs took on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58. The game will be considered one of the best in years as Patrick Mahomes took down the Niners 25-22 in overtime. However, along with the game comes advertisements with 30-second slots costing north of six million dollars this year. That being said I asked around campus to see who spent their money the wisest.
In no particular order, here are the favorites:
Nerds
Nerds used this year’s ad spot to spruce up a new product that they have been selling on the market, the gummy cluster. In order to do so, Nerds showed the behind-the-scenes of making a Nerd Cluster. Dancing nerds were able to find their home on a giant gummy before being eaten by social media influencer Addison Rae. While the ad was loved by students it received a ranking of 42 by USA Today.
Dunkin’ Donuts
The DunKings commercial gained a ton of traction this year as they were able to use a large array of celebrities. The DunKings were led by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon but also featured Tom Brady on the keyboard. These celebrities had put together a band but their track was turned down by Affleck’s lover Jennifer Lopez. The comedic commercial caught the eyes of many and got a ranking of two by USA Today.
State Farm
State Farm knocked it out of the park with this year’s ad playing on Sylvester Stallone’s accent. The actor was saving dogs and flying helicopters as he was “like a good neighbaaa” to many in the ad. However, this accent was just a bit off and Stallone could not tell the difference. Therefore, the hilarious Danny DeVito had to come in and save the day with his correct pronunciation of neighbor. Stallone did not like DeVito stealing his thunder and therefore called DeVito a backstabaaa. This hilarious commercial topped this year’s USA Today charts and was loved by many age groups across the nation, including University of Minnesota students.
Uber Eats
Uber Eats dazzled as well with a play on the saying, “You have to forget something to remember something else”. The advertisement was able to use Jelly Roll forgetting his face tattoos, but was capped off with Jennifer Aniston. The Friends actor was left speechless talking to an unknown costar David Schwimmer as she had already remembered her Uber Eats! The commercial added to the theme of celebrity use and dazzled many Friends lovers. As for the ranking, USA Today gave them the fourth spot with “Worth Remembering”.
Budweiser
Another student favorite was Budweiser’s more heart-drawn commercial. The advertisement featured their iconic horses saving the day in an extreme storm. It showed a journey to save the night, led by a puppy! While the story was effective the music gave the students what they wanted. The Weight will always be an iconic song and was used perfectly in this ad. The Budweiser commercial marks a blast to the past as their past Bud Light advertisements gained controversy. However, the bounce back was insane as they were number eight on the USA Today rankings.
The theme was plain and simple this year; stick to the celebrities. Most of the top advertisements used them and succeeded. But, is the price they pay worth the publicity?
Finally, another theme that prevailed was that if you are not cosmetic you have to be different. The only ads receiving good notes that were not the funniest were the ones that pulled at the heart. This use of logos is important and may be more of a factor in the future of Super Bowl advertisements.
