With a subpar start to the Minnesota Twins season, things must turn around quickly for the team to find themselves in the playoffs. Last season ended with a bang, as the Twins were able to win their first postseason series snapping a historic 18-game postseason winning streak.
Propelling the Twins to that postseason success were pitcher Pablo Lopez and third baseman Royce Lewis. Now in a new season, the two have not been as productive. Lewis started the season with a home run but was later injured in the game which has had him on the bench since. As for Lopez, the star pitcher has allowed 20 runs, and just gotten the team one win in the 2024 season thus far.
As for other stars like Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa things have also been off to a bad start. One of the only hitting bright spots; Carlos Correa has found himself on the injured list, and will be on the bench for at least two weeks. Buxton on the other hand is only batting .200 and has yet to hit a homer for the Twins in 2024.
With struggling stars, and others not being able to pick up the slack the Twins have started with a 6-9 record. The team has not been able to hit the ball and has lacked quality starts from their pitching. This start puts them in 4th place in a bad AL Central division. This bad start has students on the edge of their seats. Student Tommy Luzum stated, “With an already lacking pitching staff we need to hit better to even have a chance in October”. However, we all know a lot can change in a 162-game season.
Although the team has struggled, Target Field has not, as Twins fans packed the stadium for their first home stand against the Guardians and Dodgers. The Twins were able to honor first responders in the Burnsville area with a special opening day ceremony. This comes after three first responders’ lives were lost in a deadly altercation. The Twins were very generous, letting first responders onto the field, and donating a large sum of money to Burnsville first responders.
The Minnesota Twins will hope to pack the stadium often this season offering many different promotions throughout the year. This will include a special Pablo Lopez night along with many other ways for fans to get involved. Furthermore, each week the twins are offering dollar dogs on Tuesday nights and $5 student tickets Monday-Thursday.
Another hot topic is Target Fields Family Value Stand which is offering cheaper food and drinks for fans. This menu includes the basics; hotdogs, pretzels, beer, and pop. The Minnesota Twins hope with these lowered prices, families will be able to come out to the game more often, and not empty their wallets.
No matter the outcome of the season for the Twins, they will honor Joe Mauer on August 3rd. This comes after he was invited into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The day will include a special Mauer give away and fans will have a chance to see Mauer on the Field for a special presentation. To count down, the Twins have placed a tracker down the left field line for the special day.
Although Joe Mauer is always able to put a smile on the faces of Twins fans, better play will be essential for a summer of fun. Things will need to change quickly, but a quick winning streak could propel the Twins right where they need to be. To do so, the Twins will need all the cheering they can get from students across the University of Minnesota campus.
