Mustaches are Back

Colby Lentz, Contributer

Mustaches are on the come-up. Recently mustaches have been making a comeback and are better than ever. In the 1920s mustaches were a very popular trend and almost any man who could grow one, would. They were seen as a symbol of concealing scars or ailments, but soon after became a marker of social class. Famous actors and comedians were known for their iconic mustaches such as Charlie Chaplin, who people adored because of his style. After this people started to get more creative with their length and style, and many different mustaches were formed. Some common household names for mustaches are the chevron, Fu Manchu, handlebar, pencil, and toothbrush. Some people had mustaches named after them such as the Hulk Hogan which was a style of the horseshoe, which many people sought for.

People in the military were not allowed to have any facial hair on themselves, while only certain ranks in the military were permitted to do so. After World War II many men grew them as they are very much in style. The handlebar mustache was also a symbol of the bravest heroes of the war, this became one of the most popular styles.

After the release of “Top Gun: Maverick”, a sequel to “Top Gun”, men across the world were craving the idea of having a mustache. “Top Gun: Maverick” has become one of the highest-grossing films of all time at 1.454 billion USD, and is currently at Number 6 in box office history. This movie has also appealed to loads of different audiences, the first “Top Gun” came out May 16, 1986. The first “Top Gun” was a very popular movie depicting life in the military and included very intense action sequences. People praised this movie and when the sequel came out lots of people had to see it after the success of the first one.

The main character of the movie is Bradley Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, who has a gnarly mustache that everyone is going crazy for. There are many iconic scenes in the movie where Miles is dancing and this sparked up trends that required mustaches to do. On social media, there are hundreds of thousands of videos of people recreating scenes which also made mustaches more popular. This trend of growing a mustache became huge and it was blowing up all over Tik Tok with guys showing their girlfriends and rocking mustaches because of the movie. Top Gun Maverick came out on May 27, 2022, and people are still wearing them and they haven’t gotten out of style. I have even hopped on the trend myself and many of my friends have as well. I think that it makes people look a lot older and adds an extra element that is just special.

I think miles teller is a catalyst and a great sponsor head for mustaches

While walking around campus I have noticed more people having mustaches than not, and it has just become something everyone has. At first, when the “mustache trend” came out it was funny to see someone with them because for years it hasn’t really been a thing. People who have a hard time growing them or not showing up as they would like have even started dying them to make them look real. Overall, mustaches are back, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Whether you like it or not they will be around for a while as long as the Top Gun movies are popular and the trend lives on.
